The Real Migration Gallery provides royalty-free stock photos on issues of migration in South Africa. These photos feature people on migrant, asylum or refugee status. As editors and journalists, you are welcome to use these images to accompany your stories on migration.
This gallery was set up to move away from the dominant + negative imagery that typically accompanies migration-related stories – and to provide free access to quality, realistic photos of people from other countries and their lives.

The link between employment and migration is an important and sensitive one. People on valid asylum-seeker, refugee and certain immigration documentation have the right to work in South Africa.
Holding valid documentation in South Africa is critical. Without it, a person cannot be legally employed, open a bank account, get married … Remaining on valid documentation in South Africa, however, is often very difficult. Application and extension processes are often difficult for non-South Africans.
Every year, about 11,2 billion rands are remitted from South Africa to SADC regions. This stimulates the South African economy (bank charges, remittance companies) and assists regional development in Southern Africa. Global remittance flows are over three times bigger than foreign aid from high-income to lower-income countries.
