English School

If you have questions about learning English at Scalabrini, you can contact us via WhatsApp at 072 069 2014. The English School conducts classes on WhatsApp and in-person (with limited classes and capacity).

Our Objective

To improve English communication skills in order to facilitate the socioeconomic integration and wellbeing of asylum seekers, refugees, migrants, and South Africans.

Accessing English School

Refugees and migrants who lack English language skills face greater barriers in adjusting to life in South Africa, accessing social services, and securing employment. To address this need, we provide a specialised English language school to promote confidence to speak English and to integrate into society.

We offer three terms per year.

1. WhatsApp English Classes

Based on the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR) our English curriculum was developed specifically for Scalabrini clients, and is thematically organised to assist learners with integration in Cape Town. The classes are divided into the following levels:

Literacy
Beginner A
Beginner B
Pre-employment
Elementary A
Elementary B
Intermediate A
Intermediate B

Note:

Duration: 8 weeks, 2 lessons per week (4 lessons/week for Literacy classes).
Classes are FREE, but students must provide their own data.
Mid-term and Exit Assessments conducted.
Completed Homework compulsory for certificates and advancement to next level.

2. In-person English Classes

Currently, we offer in-person classes at Scalabrini Centre for clients who require basic literacy skills. Using the Kha Ri Gude programme, learners who successfully complete the class will be able to read and write critical information, read phonetically, and write phonetically.

Duration: 12 weeks, 2 lessons per week
Cost: R400 per term
Mid-term and Exit Assessments conducted.
Completed Homework compulsory for certificates and advancement to the next level.
All current COVID-19 protocols must be adhered to.

Volunteer With English School

Our volunteers come from all over the world and bring a diverse set of experiences, knowledge and abilities. They support every aspect of Scalabrini’s programmes, from English lessons and administrative support, to outreach and advocacy work.
