Accessing Welfare
Our team helps individuals get basic services like medical care, schooling, shelter, SASSA grants, and advice on returning to their home country. We also visit our most vulnerable clients at home. We provide direct support for emergencies and special situations.
The assistance will be provided in up to 3-6 weeks time from the day of consultation and assessment.
Assessment
The desk consults with clients from Monday to Friday in the morning 9:00-12:00, and in the afternoon by appointment. Clients must demonstrate willingness to work alongside the Wellbeing and Development team, by supporting change in their own life circumstances.
Our Objective
To assist clients in meeting their basic needs and to offer support to become socially integrated into South African communities.
Welfare Story
Pauline* (name changed to protect her identity) found herself in hospital in Cape Town – alone and struggling with her mental health. Once discharged from hospital, it was likely that Pauline would end up homeless. Working in collaboration with Stikland Psychiatric Hospital and their social worker, the Welfare Team helped facilitate Pauline’s repatriation, back home to the love and support of her family.
Volunteer with Scalabrini
Our volunteers come from all over the world and bring a diverse set of experiences, knowledge and abilities. They support every aspect of Scalabrini’s programmes, from English lessons and administrative support, to outreach and advocacy work.
