Your Child’s Rights
In South Africa, the law confirms that children under the age of 7, and pregnant or breastfeeding women can access public healthcare for free. This applies to people with documents and people without documents. Also, everyone in South Africa (both documented and undocumented) has the right to emergency health care.

Here are steps you can take when enrolling your child in school:

If your child is under 7 years old, your child has a right to access public healthcare. It does not matter if they have a document or if they don’t have a document. If your child is having a problem getting treatment at a clinic or hospital and the child is under 7, write down the details (the name of the clinic or hospital, the treatment, etc.) and contact our Scalabrini Advocacy Whatsapp line on 0782603536.
2. If your child is over 7 years old
If your child is over 7 years old and is having problems accessing public healthcare at a clinic or hospital, it might depend on what treatment they are accessing. They should be able to access the treatment, but there might be a bill to pay afterwards (this bill will depend on your employment status). Healthcare in South Africa can be a bit complicated.
