Walk-In Advice And Referral Service

Scalabrini’s Advocacy Programme operates a walk-in advice and referral service from 9am to 12pm from Tuesday to Friday. It also conducts a mobile advice and referral outreach clinic in partnership with the Somali Association of South Africa at their offices in Belville, Western Cape. The advice and referral clinic assists clients with documentation-related issues and advice, including general advice about navigating South Africa’s asylum system as well as practical advice and assistance with internal appeals to the Refugee Appeal Board and reviews and representations to the Standing Committee for Refugee Affairs.

The Advocacy Programme provides assistance with advice and referrals on the following issues:

Advice and assistance regarding knowledge of the refugee and asylum system in South Africa, and processes that take place within that Department;

Advice and written assistance for refugees needing an appeal to the Refugee Appeal Board (RAB);

Advice and written assistance with written representations to the Standing Committee for Refugee Affairs (SCRA) for those applying for refugee status in South Africa.;

Assistance in correspondence with the Department of Home Affairs in following up on specific matters, including applications for certification in terms of section 27(c) of the Refugees Act;

Access to Education;

Access to healthcare;

Assistance in dealing with UIF and the Department of Labour;

Assistance if you are facing unfair rental practices or potential eviction; and

Assistance with accessing the Department of Home Affairs for services such as registration of birth;

Detention and deportation issues;

Writing letters and affidavits for clients;

Accessing banking services

Assistance with labour-related issues

Assistance with housing and rent-related issues
