Citizenship and Migration
‘Migration and Citizenship’, our new documentary looks at children born in South Africa to parents who are not originally from South Africa. In 2013, the South African Legislature saw it fit to amend the Citizenship Act to allow children born in South Africa who have remained in the country until they reach the age of 18, to apply for and obtain citizenship. While this is a wonderful step towards integration, there have been challenges and difficulties with the implementation. This affects many young people living in South Africa. In our documentary we hear from Caroline about her journey to getting South African citizenship and what this means to her, as well as Sheryl Dass, a legal expert involved in the litigation on Caroline’s case.
