Until December 2009, the Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town ran an income generating activity to address the financial burden of the members of our HIV+ support group. The Beading Project proved to meet its goal in providing a significant income for the participants, and this very positive experience, together with the expertise we gained, convinced us to start a new Beading Project for the year 2010.

The aim of the Beading Project is to offer an income generating activity to refugees and asylum seekers that for different reasons struggle in sustaining themselves (disabled refugees, single mothers with children, people with HIV/AIDS). But beyond the objective difficulties that refugees and asylum seekers face, we acknowledge their creativity, enthusiasm and commitment for a better future and we strongly believe that, besides the welfare assistance, developmental programs would help them to improve their livelihoods.

Providing the participants with professional training in beadwork, life skills and financial literacy workshops, and giving them the income generated by the selling of our products, the Beading Project is part of a wider plan aimed to support the clients towards a sustainable long term livelihood.
