Ukukhanye Kwetemba (Sunshine of Hope) contains the services of three psychological counselors’ interns offering emotional and moral support to our clients.
Counseling and trauma counseling is available to all refugees and local clients who come to the centre. The trauma counselor utilizes specialized techniques to identify and work through the emotions that have been internalized from the event or events they have gone through. They help those that are suffering from a variety of conditions and are in need of counseling. They work with the refugees to help to assist them in redeveloping new coping mechanisms and strategies to overcome the state they are in, because of the failed coping mechanisms they have been employing.
The counselors also manage a free HIV Testing and VCT Counseling twice a month at the centre for our clients working in partnership with the Spencer Road Clinic and Health4Men who actually conduct the testing.
For details of times and dates of our next VCT programme please contact the Centre.
The counselors run a weekly HIV+ support group. The group share information and discuss concerns and issues around their health management and around living with the virus. Each member of the group is given access to our income-generating beading project. Scalabrini Centre markets the beaded items and attracts orders for them. We supply our clients with the raw materials to make the orders and buy the completed product from our support group participants. 90% of the income from the orders goes directly to the group.
